Charles M. Harper Sr., a certified history educator and cultural analyst, served as the historical expert in the Amazon documentary He Never Came Home. The film tells the haunting true story of a mentally disabled Black youth who was wrongfully accused of murder in 1960s rural Louisiana and subsequently confined to a mental institution for convicted felons for 42 years. Harper’s role was to provide essential historical context on the racial, legal, and institutional injustices of the Jim Crow South, helping viewers understand the systemic failures that led to this tragedy. Drawing from his expertise in U.S. history, cultural anthropology, and trauma-informed education, Harper brought depth and clarity to the broader social forces at play—amplifying his lifelong commitment to using history as a tool for justice, truth-telling, and healing.

ABOUT CHARLES

Charles M. Harper Sr. is a transformative storyteller and speaker whose lived experience and professional expertise ignite change. From growing up in poverty in Robbins, Illinois, to surviving childhood trauma, racial identity conflict, and a military misdiagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder, Charles has emerged as a leading voice on trauma-informed leadership, mental health, and organizational culture.

He has educated thousands as a certified history teacher, served as a learning and development leader, and founded HarpeRoney Consulting LLC with his wife Neecy. He is also the author of multiple works including Silence Split Open, an unflinching memoir releasing July 12, 2025. His collaborations include Grammy Award-winner Malik Yusef, WNBA star Imani Boyette, rapper Brad “Scarface” Jordan, and acclaimed director Dr. A.L. Smith.

Charles’s work has been commended by professionals and thought leaders across disciplines.
